To understand that global politics is a confluence and a conversation at the same time lies the key to realise the infinite and unbounded potential of the nation-state; and when a nation is as diverse as India, the potential to form bonds of growth and mutual cooperation that transcend demographic dividends and boundaries seem limitless. India and ASEAN have emerged as rising Asian powers in the new millennium with fast-growing new economies, and in such an age where boundaries are only so limiting – connectivity and vibrancy of relations is what will renew and revitalise prospective for development.

This very conversation is exactly what is happening right now in Guwahati, with the 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit on the theme “Connectivity: Pathway to Shared Prosperity” from 03-07 February 2019. And is quite the opportunity that has been seized with a recipe for grandeur by the leadership of the current Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal.

Citing on the possibilities of having ASEAN consulates in the city, possibly in the near future; the youth of this state find themselves at a massive vantage point where opportunities for building leadership and on untapped capabilities are going to be omnipresent.

While India’s civilisational, cultural and commercial trade links with the region go back many centuries, reinvigorated engagement within the region has come about only with India’s Act East Policy which was formally enunciated under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ;the new government of India has made its relations with East Asian neighbours a foreign policy priority at a time when the United States has engaged in a “pivot to Asia”.

The Youth Summit is expected to elicit a very positive response and result in an even deeper on-going association between the delegates. It seeks to provide a platform for youth leaders of both India and ASEAN to engage with each other to develop a resilient and symbiotic relationship between countries.

The importance of fostering such exchanges is in the significant role it plays in bringing together hearts and minds of young leaders to deliberate and bring out policies, and even help evaluate contemporary issues, to boost ties between the respective nations and to usher the region into mutual prosperity. For it is when young leaders get involved in such exchanges, they achieve higher levels of understanding of each other’s culture, politics, societies, traditions and concerns and build bridges for a global village.
