Updated: Nov 23, 2019

Trains running on solar-power may have been one of its chief technological advents before any other state surely, but Guwahati Railway Staition is making waves for other reasons now! A shelter home has been set up at platform number 1 of the Guwahati Railway Station based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the NF Railway Women Welfare Organization (NFRWWO) and Prayas JAC Society.

The shelter home will provide care and protection to vulnerable children coming in contact with Railways, rescued by Railway Protection Force (RPF) & Government Railway Police (GRP) or Childline, Child Help Desk and other concerned organizations.

An accommodation based out of a 2000 square feet area, it comprises of a dormitory, first aid room, bathrooms, counselling rooms, and a store. It would be able to accommodate 25 children at a time and provide them with basic services such as nutrition, psycho-social support, and medical aid.

Additionally, the shelter home would be used as transit in restoring the children with their families by following the laid down process under Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act, 2015.

While the NFRWWO will provide security personnel to guard the property and look after its assets, the operational expenditures for running the open shelter would be provided by the Prayas JAC Society.

We are extremely happy at the innovative, caring initiatives of the government, and hope to see that these efforts into making Assam a kinder place is a success.
