Khelo India, Khelo Assam:
Sports and fitness plays a role in our lives that is irreplaceable, and value of which cannot be measured. Playing sports, understanding the nitty-gritty of the same and building a team-spirit in its stead not only helps inculcate values like leadership, team-building bit also develops strategic & analytical thinking, goal setting awareness and risk-taking competence. A country is strong and bold when its citizens are mentally fit and physically strong and has the aforementioned qualities, which are best inculcated when they take part in some amount of sports and fitness regimes. The present Government’s emphasis on fitness, and health through the medium of sports (integrated comprehensively into the curriculum of schools, and daily lives of adults) is definitely aiding to the development of the nation.
It is no surprise that India is filled of extraordinary talents in every field, and sports also is no exception. This tremendous potential needs to be showcased at a global platform.
Keeping in consonance with this, the ‘Khelo India’ program has been introduced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) to revive sports as culture, and way of being in India. And how is this being
achieved? Getting to the grass-roots, and building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and thereby, seeking to establish India as a great sporting nation. The first ‘Khelo India’ tournament was successfully concluded in Delhi in the year 2018, and the second one in Pune in the year 2019. The upcoming tournament will be held in Gateway of Northeast, Guwahati in the month of January, 2020.
This tournament features a number of sports like Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kho Kho , Shooting , Swimming, Table Tennis , Volleyball , Weightlifting and Wrestling.
This time the games will see a participation of a whopping 10,000 athletes and officials. It will be conducted in partnership with IOA, SGFI & Assam as host State.
In the same light, it begs recognition that Assam is turning a sports hub and Guwahati is becoming the Sports Capital under the able governance of Sarbananda Sonowal. The roping in of the ‘Khelo India’ tournament in Guwahati is a milestone for the sports genre that is developing tremendously under him. Assam and the North East in its togetherness has so much raw talent. The organizing of the events are giving enough chances for the hidden talents to rise and shine in the national and international arena.
This opportunity is surely to bring in new chances and opportunities for the state to enhance itself as the Sports Capital of India. At this stage, therefore, we can say that we are witnessing a giant steps towards the ambitious milestones of success and progress, as is rightly deserved by us, and our people.
