Maheshwar Neog: An Epitome Of Knowledge
Padma Shri Dr. Maheswar Neog was a highly learned man with exorbitant knowledge who made valuable contributions to the culture of Assam. He is considered to be the crème de la crème of modern Assamese intellectuals, representing the Nava Vaishnava tradition. He belonged to a very humble family and though his father had received no formal education, he considered his father as his first teacher.
Professor Neog was an Assamese language scholar and poet who specialised in the cultural history of North-East India, particularly Assam. The expanse of his knowledge was vast and his area of study covered all aspects of Indian Studies, including cultural history, philosophy, painting, religion and performing arts. He produced critical editions of several ancient and medieval texts in Sanskrit and Assamese. He was also the one to bring the Satriya dance form of Assam to the forefront of Indian culture and at par with other classical dance forms of India.
Dr. Maheswar Neog earned many laurels in his lifetime and achieved many milestones in the field of literature, culture and academics. Apart from being a Padma Shri awardee, he also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, the highest award conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademy, India’s national academy for music, dance and drama.
The great scholar left for his heavenly abode on the 13th of September, 1995, leaving behind a huge literary, cultural and intellectual legacy. His void is still felt in the intellectual domain of Assam.
