At such times where women perceive of the social system as perilous and infested with disadvantages and a plan to marginalise, the north-eastern state of Assam - frequently making headlines for its fervent political and regional issues and hot topics, women stand at the forefront of many ventures and excellence stories.
Here’s a list of empowerment stories that will make you rethink the manner in which women representation is sought:
● An all-woman Assam Rifles contingent created history this year by participating for the first time in the Republic Day Parade, led by Major Khushboo Kanwar; the total of these 146 members - all women, a contingent of the para military marched on the majestic Rajpath.
● A bank for women and run by women: Established in 1988, Konoklota Mahila Urban Cooperative Bank became one the seven institutes to receive the Nari Shakti Award from former President Pranab Mukherjee for its “exceptional contribution to the empowerment of women” in 2015. ● Named after the courageous Ahom princess Joymoti, the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) launched a dedicated Railway Protection Force (RPF) women squad, Joyamati Bahini (or the army of Joymati) to “strengthen women security around Guwahati region within railway premises and trains.” The members of the Joymati Bahini will be in-charge of women and children, especially by ensuring that no one breaches the sanctity of reserved compartments for women.
